As much as I dislike Richard Dawkins (for various reasons -- and I say this as a biologist), I have a bizarre tendency to buy his books whenever I come across them in used bookstores.

invisible cities by italo calvino, who is apparently the italian borges (i think not)

listening to shajarian recite the quran (this in particular) and forough farrokhzad recite poetry always makes me want to cry (ha! there is no remotely eloquent way to put this).

a mere nine weeks after declaring salmonella outbreaks as my research topic -- lo and behold! a salmonella outbreak in the united states!

the upside of pickiness: while hundreds (thousands?) of people face the wrath of 550 million microbe-imbued eggs, the only consequence i face is a revised thesis and introductory paragraph.
